Top 5: 12 Comic Book Movies

This is a list of my top five something. Most of the time my lists are pretty static, but sometimes I do change my mind. While I do try to apply some logic to my choices, sometimes I pick things that make no sense and for no good reason other than “I like it.”

Wikipedia
Comic Book (non-animated) Movies
1. Batman 1989
2. The Avengers
3. The Incredible Hulk
4. Dark Knight Rises
5. The Watchmen
-Honorable Mention- Man of Steel

I can’t spend too much time thinking about this list because it can and will change depending on my mood. I’m constantly discussing my opinions with other fans of geekery and sometimes they influence me, but in the end I decide.

Here is some more cool conceptual art. If there is still someone out there who didn’t know I like Batman, well, now you know. He’s my favorite comic book hero. The only other hero I’m liking as much as him right now is, Giovanni, from my Eternal Curse Series, but that of course is a little biased.

Batman is my favorite comic book hero whether he’s the caped crusader, part of the dynamic duo, the world’s greatest detective, or the dark knight. He’s my favorite for three basic reasons.

1. He’s super smart and observant.

2. He’s not afraid to admit it when he doesn’t know something; that’s why he spends so much time researching and training, so he can know as much as possible. If anything, he’s a role model for doing your homework and not wasting a good mind. (We’ll just overlook his policy on following the rules.)

3. He has no super powers, but is the first to be called when the super heroes need help.

Don’t get me wrong, I know billions of dollars have helped Batman’s cause, but that’s one more reason why I like him as a person (real or fake good qualities count). Bruce Wayne, or whatever Batman is popular at the time, is who he is because of tragedy. Batman could easily have chosen to become a villain, but he chose to be good (or at least fright crime). Speaking specifically of Bruce Wayne, despite his playboy persona, he’s a hero because, even with all his money, he knows he could never be happy knowing that there is evil unchecked in this world as he sat around and did nothing.

My Geekdom 04: Marvel Comic Books

The Marvel Universe is more of my style of fantasy (even though I LOVE D.C.), but it’s also scary enough that sometimes, it’s too much for me. Marvel blends fantasy and reality. These superheroes interact with real people and visit real places as well as take on fictional people and places. I do, somewhere in the back of my little geek mind, sometimes worry about will happen when Apocalypse comes to claim the earth, but I know that the mutants, the radioactively altered, the genius minds, and other world gods are just waiting to come to our rescue.

Heroes with flaws seemed silly in the heyday of comic books, but now perfect super heroes just can’t be taken seriously. Marvel was the first company to really embrace this idea and increased their popularity with it. Other companies, including D.C., have also embraced the flawed hero idea, and the world of comic books and storytelling is all the better for it.

In Eternal Curse all my characters good, bad, male, female, super, or not have flaws. In in some cases the flaws are actually a blessing, but I don’t have time to get into that now. In any case, flaws add a human factor to story-telling that makes the impossible seem believable.

You’re going to see tons of superheroes in these posts, so go ahead and accept it now.

It’s no secret that I have a thing for superheroes, but why is it that I like D.C. and the JLA so much? They are not the only dynamic group of heroes, all coming from different backgrounds and experiences to unite and fight against evil, but there is something unique about them. The D.C. Universe is one of my favorite alternate realities. All the people and place are similar to reality, but there’s no real sense of true danger. I don’t have to worry about what happens if Darksied attacks Metropolis because it’s not a real place.

In my writing I like to blur fiction and reality. I include places that really exist along with places I’ve made up. That’s doesn’t mean that I won’t be creating other worlds of my own. I will, just not in the Eternal Curse Series.
